Conditional Tense --What is it? Are these example correct?

    Examples:
    1. When probability gives us a dim chance of surviving, I would hope that we surive.

2.All i'm saying is, if I die, I would prefer a colorful death.

I don't fully understand the conditional tense. What changes?
