    There are semantic classifications as well as syntactical classifications.

    Syntactical classification means the diferent valency patterns, the number of arguments with which a verb combines to make a well-formed sentence.

    SV = intransitive verb
    SVO = monotransitive verb
    SVC = linking verb
    SVA = linking verb
    SVOO = ditransitive verb
    SVOC = complex-transitive verb
    SVOA = monotransitive verb

    We can classify verbs according to their function. This is aslo a syntactical classification of verbs.

    - lexical verbs (main verbs in sentences)
    - primary verbs (main verb or helping verb)
    - modal auxiliaries (helping verbs)

    Semantic classification (according to the type of activity verbs express):

    - activity verbs (refer to volitional activity)
    - communication verbs (involves communication)
    - mental verbs (thinking, reading, loving, wanting, hearing, tasting)
    - causative verbs (involves an instigator)
    - verbs of occurrence (no actor in the event)
    - verbs of existence or relationship (report state of existence (stay, live, appear, seem, ...) or relationship between entities (include, involve, ...)
    - verbs of aspect (characterize the stage of progress of an activity)
