    Exclamation what's the time?

    Hi,

I have a doubt. The other day my little cousin came saying that his teacher had taught him to ask the time saying ;"What's the time?" and I told him that the proper way to ask the time was "What time is it?" not the other way.

But now I'm not sure if the way his teacher taught him is also correct.

so my question is Which is the proper way to ask someone what the time is.

    Thank you

Both are widely used. You could say that "What time is it please?" is more formal than "What's the time please?".

***NOT A TEACHER***Here in the States, a very courteous person might ask: Excuse me. May I ask what time IT IS?

    Re: what's the time?

    ok thank you.

I've never before heard about the informal way "What's the time" that's why I thought it was wrong. Anyway it sounds to me rather informal to teach it as the normal way to ask someone the time.
