How can you have your beady eye on me if you are all ears?

Anyway...

Language seems to be the best candidate for what separates Homo sapiens from other species; and, although other species sometimes can be shown to have something a little like human language, there has never been any evidence of syntax -- the ability to construct new sentences.

So, why, in the world, would someone not delight in something that is so human?

Both idioms express the listener is concentrating, making an all-out effort to catch each word the speaker is saying.

Yes, I like them both, but together you get a funny mixed metaphor.
