    Question Sentence

    Can you use the word 'had' next to eachother in a sentence such as... I knew that I had had too many to choose from.

    Of course. "had had" is the past perfect form of "to have". That is you had something that impacted something else that also happened in the past, but after the initial event.
    For example, "By the time I got married, I had had several other relationships." If you don't like "had had" use a more specific verb, e.g., "I had been in several other relationships."

    ***NOT A TEACHER***If you feel uncomfortable in saying "had had," you can do what some native speakers do in speech: (1) drop the first "had" or (2) use a contraction. (a) If I (had) had time, I would have visited you yesterday. (2) If I'd had time, I. ... Thank you.
