    Happy Christmas!

    Dear all,

I'd like to know when you use the phrase "Happy Christmas". Is it okay to say it after Christmas if it's still in the Christmas holiday? I haven't lived in a Christian culture, so I'm not sure if its acceptable to say "Happy Christmas" on the 26th of December or later.

    Thank you

    OP

    Re: Happy Christmas!

These days most people see Christmas as over on the 27th. However, if you are invited to a special meal around this time, you will still say "Happy Christmas". The greeting changes on 1st January to Happy New Year.

You could vary it a bit- I hope you're having a good Christmas...

    Re: Happy Christmas!

I was watching an American crime show last night, and they caught a baddie who said in a ransom call to the kidnapped child's mother:
"Pay up or you won't have a very Happy Christmas".

Apparently using "Happy Christmas" was a giveaway that he was British, which fit one of the suspects. If he'd said "Merry Christmas", as an American would, he might have got away with it.

[Don't blame me. I didn't write the show!]
