Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

The Lord, who is rich in mercy, and ever willing to answer the consistent prayer of the humble, after we had called upon Him in a fervent manner, aside from the abodes of men, condescended to manifest to us His will.

condescend = have the kindness to; deign

manifest = demonstrate; display

A teacher should never make the mistake of condescending to children.

condenscend = be indulgent

I'm surprised at you, condescending to such tricks!

condescend o.s = debase o.s

I never thought he would condescend to cheating.

condescend = degradate

He seemed to be condescending all the time he was speaking to his staff.

Mrs. Smith condescends to all her neighbours.http://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/eng_rus/153932/миссис

condescend = behave in a patronizing and condescending manner; give o.s air; throw one’s weight about

She doesn't like to be condescended to.

condescend = abase

Twas the voice of an angel from glory, ’twas a message from the Most High!

‘twas = it was

Overhead the hollow stretch of whitish cloud shutting out the sky was as a tent which had the whole heath for its floor. stretch = surface
shut out = cover, intercept

heath = a low evergreen shrub which has small bell-shaped pink or purple flowers

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

Generally OK. I might make these changes:

A teacher should never make the mistake of condescending to children.

He seemed to be condescending all the time he was speaking to his staff.

Mrs. Smith condescends to all her neighbours.

She doesn't like to be condescended to.

condescend = to behave as if one is conscious of descending from a superior position, rank, or dignity.

I'm surprised at you, condescending to such tricks!

I never thought he would condescend to cheating.

condescend = to stoop or deign to do something: He would not condescend to misrepresent the fact.

Overhead the hollow stretch of whitish cloud shutting out the sky was as a tent which had the whole heath for its floor.

heath = a tract of open and uncultivated land; wasteland overgrown with shrubs.

I'd use this: A teacher should never make the mistake of being condescending to children.
