    Should I use 'the'?

    Dear Friends,

In an academic paper I have read:

A further example of speakers' attitude-based choice of negation forms concerns the use of determiner 'no' and adverbial 'not':

    1. Oscar Wilde is not a genius.
    2. Oscar Wilde is no genius.

My question is that should we not use the definite article in front of 'determiner' and 'adverbial': the use of the determiner 'no' and the adverbial 'not'?

    Thank you for your help.

    This is my opinion:

Both versions are grammatical. Without the articles, the rhythm of the sentence is smoother.

***NOT A TEACHER***Your question brings up a very interesting aspect of English. I shall leave your Oscar Wilde question to the experts, but you may wish to know this: (1) Mr. Smith is not a teacher. = He has another kind of profession. Maybe he is a physician. (2) What do you think about Mr. Smith? / Are you kidding? He is no teacher!!! = He IS a teacher but a very incompetent one. Thank you.

    Re: Should I use 'the'?

I would absolutely use an article!
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
