Literature for ESL Students

Hi there

Can anyone recommend a good fiction book/collection of short stories for an ESL student, with only a basic grasp of written English?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

How old? From which country?

How about Jan Mark or Margaret Mahy, both of whom wrote short stories for teenagers.
