    hello,,i'll be direct,,read this,,,(By the time i reached the restaurant my friends had left) does this sentence mean that they left before i reached or when i reached ? thx in instance,,

    That means your friend wasn't there by the time you got there.
    Which refers to that he must have had left earlier.
