Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

Without care it may be used to vitiate our minds.

This undistinguishing complaisance will vitiate the taste of readers.

His constitution was vitiated by excess.

vitiate = to make vicious, faulty, or imperfect; to render defective; to injure the substance or qualities of; to impair; to contaminate; to spoil;

This admission vitiates your argument.

vitiate = refute; invalidate

When two worlds ceased to exist – the USSR fell, Germany united, and the former socialist camp faded into oblivion – there was no longer the need to build bridges, and the festival seemed to have lost its supporting ground.

The snow never ceased falling.

He ceased going there.

She ceased driving a car.

When will this quarrelling cease?

Cease fire!" the captain cried, and the shooting stopped.

cease = put an end to a state or an activity


There is no cease for alarm.



She had good cease to be disappointed.


We ceased them a lot of trouble.


The incident ceased me to reflect.



oblivion = the state of being forgotten, esp. by the public: his name will fade into oblivion.

Her manner of life during these years is pleasant to contemplate.

contemplate = meditate; muse

He contemplates going to London next week.

contemplate = plan

I do not contemplate any opposition from him.

contemplate = expect

All look fine except the two underlined setences where 'cease' is used as noun. To they sound odd.
