Re: Deep pocker

If someone has deep pockets, they're rich. If they have deep pockets ad short arms, they're mean.

Thanks Tdol.

Could you please explain the meaning of short arms?

Re: Deep pocker

If they have deep pockets, it's a long way to reach, so if they have short arms, they don't reach down to their money.

You can be made of money/well off/ filthy rich, etc. You'll find lots of money-related idioms here: Idiom Category: Money - UsingEnglish.com

 Incidentally, one way of getting rich is to be born 'into money' (= 'born with a silver spoon in your mouth'. Or, if the enrichment happens after birth, then you 'come into money'.

We say things like, "He's loaded/ rolling in it/ papering the walls with it/ stinking rich/ filthy rich/ got so much money he doesn't know what to do with it."

In the UK, do you use "deep pockets" simply to refer to someone with a lot of money? In the US, we often use it in legal situations - two companies are being sued for something, but even though one company is barely connected with the accident, they are the big, rich company. So you add that second company to the law suit because they have "deep pockets" and can pay, even though the other company, which is small without much money, is more directly connected.

Like you. we'd be unlikely to use that phrase to describe an individual, but it does come up in reference to, say, the recent fine levied on BEA Systems.
