Question Had I said something wrong?

    Dear teachers,

During a job interview, the interviewer asked me this question:
"Was there something that you wanted to do if you could?"
This is my response to the question:
"I wish I was an attorney so that I could help the poor people in need."

But I could feel that the interviewer was not satisfied with my answer.
Was there any grammatical mistake in my answer
or did my answer stray from the question, teachers?

    Please kindly help.

    Thanks a lot.

Re: Had I said something wrong?

I would say the interviewer feels you have missed the point of the question. It may be that he hoped you would say that you wanted to live amongst the Inuit or walk across the Sahara - ie do something way out of your normal routines.

***NOT A TEACHER***Is it possible that the interviewer expected you to say: I wish that I WERE an attorney....
