    an or a ?

    Hello,

I would like to know if in the following sentence there is a mistake (show the article in bold), I am thinking about the indefinite article 'a', maybe the article an is the real word that will have write the writer of this article.

    'Mullah Baradar had been
a important contact for the Afghans for years, Afghan officials said.'

I have just read this in The New York Time, I believe it's a typography error but I prefer to have your opinion about this case.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Do not hesitate to correct me.
