Hi, everyone.
Long time no see.:-D:-D
Today I have a question as to the usage of 'surprising.'
First, please read the passage below.
"Yuina, you're a kind girl. I can't do it because I have bad knees," he said.
I started to pull out the weeds. Mr. Kondo sat on a chair in the garden and talked to me. He looked very happy. He said, "I am from Fukushima. In Fukushima we had a lot of snow in winter. We helped each other to remove the snow around our houses. When I was young, we often helped each other in our community. We called it yui. Yui means ties between people. I think it's a beautiful word. And, you know, the kanji for the word is in your name. You have a beautiful name."
I was surprised to hear this. "I've never heard about yui before," I said.
Question
Put an appropriate word in each bracket.
Mr. Kondo told Yuina about his ( a ) in Fukushima. People in his community helped each other and called it yui. That was a ( b ) story to her.
There are some possibilities, I think.
In ( a ), I would put 'experience', 'memory' or 'life.'
In ( b ), I'd put 'surprising' or 'new.'
However....one of my students asked an ALT(Assistant Language Teacher) if the word 'surprising' for ( b ) is OK or not, and he/she reportedly answered, "It's unusual. The word is not used that way."
Is he/she sure???? I'm very confused now....:-?
Yuina was surprised to hear the story.
The story was surprising to her.
It was a surprising story to her.
I cannot see any grammatical errors here.
Could you please give me your comments on this one?
(I would like some comments from native speakers of English.)
Thank you in advance.:-D:-D
