Is it possible to say: Five people there were. OR do we always have to say: Five people were there. (it sounds to me like an inversion when there is no question "were there").
Were there five people? This is correct, because 'there' is placed after the verb.
‘there’ can be an adverb or a pronoun. As pronoun it is used to introduce a sentence or clause in which the verb comes before its subject):
There is a message for you.
There were five people in the waiting room
When used as adverb it is usually comes after the verb.
The message is there on the table.
Five people were there in the waiting room.
