    knowledge and understanding

Do "knowledge" and "understanding" express pretty much the same thing, thus making it unnecessary to say "knowledge and understanding"? Would it be better to say only "knowledge" or only "understanding" in the sentence below?

The course I took deepened my knowledge and understanding of Roman law.

    Thanks.

They are different things, and your sentence should use both if you mean both.
Most people know that e = mc^2, but few would understand it.
You could know that Roman law prescribed 100 lashes for bestiality without understanding the reasons or principles behind the law.

On the other hand it's harder to understand something if you don't know it (or about it).
