    what is the verb in this sentence
    "We take a long walk"

    Would it help if I told you that "[a long] walk" is a noun [phrase] in this sentence; "walk" is not a verb.

    (1) We = subject.

    (2) take = verb.

    (3) a long walk. = direct object.

    Will.../tell; would.../told. There are teachers who believe (with quasi-religious fervour) that modals have no tense; the people they teach may well say things like 'would it help if I tell you...'. Many people don't agree (and think the verbs should 'agree').
