    Use of "Whether"

    Dear Teacher,

Would you please help me on the following question? I cannot decide whether B or D is correct. I would choose B on the exam.
    Thanks and regards.

He asked me whether I _____ the name of the Ottoman Emperor who followed Orhan.

    A) know
    B) knew
    C) was knowing
    D) would know

    B is correct.
You should follow the rules of reported speech.
The direct question here would be 'Do you know...'. When you change it to affirmative form and use one-tense-back shift (Present S. To Past S.) you get 'knew'.
