    Cool Batting back

    In this sentence:

Batting back her smoking red-and-tigerhide cape, the mage saw the skulker

What does batting back mean ? It seems it means : throwing back the cape, but I don't get any dictionary verifying my conjecture.

    Thank You

It probably means "throwing back" but it's a strange use of the word.
