    He pretended that he was rich.
    He acted as if he were rich.

    I hope that the principle of this is clear. You can probably get away with saying, "He pretended as if he were..." but it is simpler -- and I believe more accurate -- to say "He pretended that he was..."

    No.
    Add "He pretended to be rich" to the above examples.
