who/ what choice

Hi, everyone!
I'd like to aske someone who speaks English as their native language.

You made me [what/ who] I am now.

In the sentence above, I know "what" is the correct choice, but is "who" totally wrong? It seems to me "who" also makes sense even if the meaning can be different.

You made me what I am now.

probably sounds more meaningful. It means 'you have been a great influence to my character' or 'you have contributed to my achieving the present position.'
