    Can I say, I could not make this happen "as" I tried to convince them to work hard.

    Can I use "as" here?

    Not a teacher.
    In my dictionary, one of the synonym of the conjunction 'as' is 'though' when it is used to say that in spite of sth being true, what follows is also true, so I think you could use 'as' but 'although' is more suitable.
