    is this sentence correct

    when I was a high school student I never asked my teacher about the format of the exams

    No, you need to start with a capital letter and finish with a period.
    Otherwise, it's probably alright.

    Shouldn't he toss in a comma between the adverbial clause and the main clause?

    When I was a high school student, I never asked my teacher about the format of the exams.

    Possibly. It doesn't concern me in such a short sentence. And the meaning doesn't change.

    I don't find any error in that sentence. If I have to be specific, then, I should look into the case of the letters and punctuation.

    If you are no longer in high school, and you are telling friends about your past experiences, I would prefer:

    When I was a high school student, I would never ask my teachers about the format of the examinations.

    I cannot explain why. If anyone agrees with me, would you please explain the grammar involved.

    Aren't both as correct? Both 'would' and past simple can denote repeated actions (or actions never taken), AFAIK.
