Maybe, but I'm not completely sure about this. I far as I know shīfu is used to address persons who have mastered an art, like for example, a martial art.

Perhaps one of the Chinese visitors to the board can shed some more light on this.

(2) I know a little (VERY little) Chinese.

(a) Where did you get this conversation from?
(b) Does it refer to a situation in China?

(3) IF it does refer to China, then I can tell you what my books say:

(a) "shifu" means a skilled craftsman. Someone who knows his trade very well.

(i) In your conversation, someone says: "I have to report to my shifu tomorrow." Does that mean he has to report to someone who will teach him some kind of skill?

(ii) Yes, the dictionaries say that "shifu" also means "teacher," but maybe not the kind of teacher in an organized school. For example, if you want to cook well, a chef can be your "teacher."

My books tell me that today "shifu" in China is a polite way to speak with anyone (male or female) who helps you. If a mechanic fixes your car, you can call him "shifu." You can even use "shifu" to address a person who sells you a newspaper. It's very polite to use "shifu" because you are saying s/he is a "master" at whatever job s/he does.

Let's hope that some Chinese friends answer you. And can you give us more details? Is this conversation from a film? Does it have a Chinese background? The shifu is a lady. What job does she have?

Shi1 Fu4 (師傅), Shi1(師) means teacher or someone that teaches, Fu4(傅) means the person that impart the skill or knowledge.

Therefore, joining this two words mean teacher or master in the sense that someone is imparting or teaching you a skill, knowledge or an art.

Traditionally, the word shifu is used when a student is addressing his teacher who is imparting him a skill. For example, a martial art teacher teaching his students Taichi, his students will address his teacher as shifu, in the same sense Japanese addresses their teacher as sensei.

However, it can also be used to by someone who is not a student of this teacher to address that teacher as shifu out of respect. For example, it is very common to address that teacher who teaches as Shifu.

In the Chinese culture, anyone who is skilled at something can be your teacher to teach you something, therefore, it is a respect to address that person as shifu. For example the chef, you call him shifu...etc.
