    In a sentence like "I am 15" or "I am..." what is the subject?

    Answer this question: Who is 15?
    The personal pronoun is the subject.

    Another example: John plays the piano.
    Who plays the piano?
    John=the subject=the element which performs the "action" denoted by the verb.
