    the meaning of a sentence

    Hi~ here's the sentence
Instant speech and admiration from those who know you took on the speaking assignment without hesitation or delay.

Please explain the meaning. esp. I can't figure out the meaning of the phrase "take on".

    Thanks in advance.

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Good morning.

    (1) In your sentence, it means "to accept."

    (a) You accepted the assignment without hesitation or delay.

    (2) In other sentences, it could have other meanings:

TOM: I don't like the job you are doing.

JIM: Oh, yeah? Are you man enough to take me on? = to challenge me/ fight with me.

It's a strange sentence, is there any context for it?

    Here is the excerpt:
Take the topic you speak on most often and tweak it to appeal to another audience. For example, if you typically speak about the importance of listening to the customer and you make this presentation to salespeople, speak to nonsalespeople about the importance of listening to others to achieve their goals. Be brief and to the point. Be ready to deliver it in your winning style whenever asked. Voilą, instant speech and admiration from those who know you took on the speaking assignment without hesitation
    or delay.

I agree. I don't understand the "Instant speech" part -- I understand that by accepting the task without hesitation you earned admiration, but not the rest.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
