[Vocabulary] What does "put out" mean here?

A puzzling sentence reads "Tender crops that the hopeful farmers had put out earlier in the month were killed by the unseasonable frost". I can't decide which meaning to choose about "put out".

Thanks for the reply! Its makes perfect sense from our general knowledge, but I am wondering why I did not find it in the dictionaries.
I use the longman online dictionary, which item should correspond to this meaning?

"To put out" is a phrasal verb, try looking up a list of phrasal verbs with "put".
