Exclamation "liked his martinis with a splash of gin" ???

    hi everyone
please help me understand what this text wants to say:

To say that reviewers have been uncharitable toward Bakerís opus is a bit like saying that Churchill liked his martinis with a splash of gin.

Re: "liked his martinis with a splash of gin" ???

When mixing drinks, 'with a splash of <drink>' means with a very small amount of it. Churchill was known to be a hard drinker. He liked strong martinis. Once, when told by a woman 'You, sir, are drunk' he is said to have replied 'And you, madam, are ugly. But I shall be sober in the morning.'

Your sentence is saying reviewers have been extremely unncharitable to Baker's work.
