1. assess the strength and weaknesses of the folowwing as thesis statments.
-my instructor has an attendance policy.
-my instructor should change her attendance policy because it is unreasonable, inflexible, and unfair.
-for many people, a community college makes more sense than a four-year college or university.
-some children show violent behavior
-violance is a problem in society
-conflict-resolution courses should be taught to help prevent violance in America`s schools.
-Social networking sites such as Facebook can cause problems.
-Facebook attracts many college students.
- College students should be careful of what material they put on their Facebook pages because prspective employers routinely check them.

2. rewrite the following factual statments to make them effective thesis statments. make sure each thesis statment is a clearly and specifically worded sentence.
-Many hospitals will not admit patients without health insuarance becaue they are afraid that such patients will not be able to pay their bills.
-Several Supreme Court decisions have said that art containing explict sexual images is not necessarily pornographic.
-many women earn less money than men do, in part because they drop out of the workforce during their child-rearing years.
- People who watch more than five hours of television a day tend do think the world is more violant than do people who watch less than two hours of television daily.
-in recent years, the suicide rate among teenagers- especially middle-and upper-middle-class teenagers - has risen dramatically.

3. read the following sentences from, "Argument Culture" by Deborah Tannen. then, formulate a one-sentence thesis statment that summarizes the key points Tannen makes about the naure of argument in our culture.
-"more and more, our public interactions have become like arguing with a spouse."
- "Nearly everything is framed as a battle or game in which winningor losing is the main concern"
-"The argument culture pervads every aspect of our lives tody"
-"issues from global warming to abortion are depicted as two-sided arguments, when in fact most Americans` views lie somewhere in the middle"
- "What`s wrong with the argument culture is the ubiquity, the knee-jerk nature of approaching any issua, problems, or public person in an adversarial way"
- 'If you fight to win, the temtation is great to deny facts that support your opponent`s views and say only what supports your side."
-"We must expand the notion of"debate"to include more dialogue"
"Perhaps it is time to re-examine th assumption that audiences always prefer a fight"
-"Instead of insisting on hearing "both sides", let`s insist on hearing ` all sides."

This is not a good thesis statement because it is either true or not true. It's not something you can offer arguments and counterarguments for.

It's not a good thesis statement for the same reason as the one in 1. It's obviously true, and requires no argument.
It seems you are being asked to evaluate certain statements as to their suitability for argument in an essay. A statement can sound OK without it being a suitable thesis statement.

Obama is the president of the USA.

That is a correct, true, OK statement. But how do you write an argumentative essay on it?
