    Re: Using "the"

In case there are other learners trying to understand why it's a university instead of an university, remember that it's not the vowel that leads to the use of "an" but the vowel sound. University starts with a Y sound.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: Using "the"

I'm not sure that we need any article before "university" - thats what out teacher told us: "I work in university." I thought that mistake could be in the second part of the sentence, not in first. Now its even more confused for me.

Why do you put an article in the first part of the sentence?

You make a general statement in the lst sentence, hence 'a'. You did not identify the university.
You go on to say more about the university, hence 'the'.

a university, a uniform, a unit (the aeiou rule does not apply)

    an honest person

    not a teacher

    Re: Using "the"

A university when mentioned for the first time, and we don't know exactly what university someone is talking about
The university when mentioned again so we know what university someone is talking about
