    What do these setences mean?

Read an article about someone's experience of mishaps in traveling, and got a few questions.

    1. "Upon check-in, always ask to see the destination tag before your bag goes on the conveyor belt. If youíre departing on a long, expensive trip for which there will be little recourse if either you or your luggage fails to arrive, plan to fly in at least one day early. Also, donít choose the last flight of the day. And donít forget to put essentials, such as cameras and documents, in your carry-on bag."

    2. "As soon as you know you wonít make your plane, call the airlineís reservations line and ask for help rebooking on a later flight. If the problem is nearly catastrophic (e.g., youíll miss your wedding), ask the agent to help you get on another airline if yours doesnít have later service. Be prepared to pay extra. Donít fuss."

    3. "The more important the trip, the more important it is to build in time before and after for unforeseen circumstances."

Not quite sure what the underlined parts mean. Can anyone help me with these?
    Many many thanks~
