how to tell when the word 'rest' is uncountable and when it is countable?

What sort of 'rest'? When 'the rest' means 'the remaining people/things', it's countable; musical 'rests' are countable... I can't at the moment thing of a sort of 'rest' that is UC, but... :)

i mean 'rest' as in taking a rest. i referred to a dictionary, it only gave me (countable/uncountable). no further explanation given.

Countable: He's having/taking a rest now.

Uncountable: I have a serious illness so I need a lot of rest.
