Hello,

An article contained the sentence, "The school, which had been remaining closed for 10 years, started functioning"

Now, there is a dispute over the usage "had been remaining", with a group suggesting that it should have been "was remaining".

Please advise whether "had been remaining" in this context is correct or not.

I disagree with both!

The school, which had remained closed for 10 years, re-opened.
The school, which had been closed for 10 years, ......
The school, which (closed in 1999 and) remained closed for 10 years, ........
