    Which sentence is correct?
    On December 5, 1937, I was born.
    On December 5, 1937 I was born.

    Well, neither, really! It should be:

    I was born on December 5th, 1937.

    Most style guides tell you to put a comma before and after a year if the full date is in running text.

    May 4, 2010, was my first day of work.

    Similarly, the same guides will tell you to put a comma before and after the state in running text.

    Freeport, Maine, has more to offer than just outlet store.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
