(1) Are you referring to the idiom "to be called on the carpet"?

(a) This means that the boss (or any superior) calls you to his/her office

because s/he is very angry with you for something that you did.

(b) I do NOT know how this idiom started.

(i) But I remember it this way:

The boss's office probably has a nice, thick carpet.

I agree with TheParser. We have the same expression in Polish.
