could someone tell me which sentence mentioned below is correct and why.

1) what software is installed on my computer?

2) what software is installed in my computer?

I'm not completely sure but programs are installed on your computer and hard drives are installed in your computer. Let's wait for more opinions.

As far as I'm concerned, software is installed on a computer.

I agree that we use

which software is installed on the computer?

But my concern is, technically speaking the software is loaded inside the hard drive. The files go in the hard drive. Therefore, i think saying "software installed in the computer" should also be acceptable.

I am not sure either...

Lets wait for some more answers and explanation to this....

It's an interesting point. However, technically speaking, software programs are magnetically written (installed) on HDD (Hard Drive Disk), not in HDD. When you click and load your program, the computer reads data from the HDD and load them on the memory called RAM (random access memory).
