    the verb "cross over"

What does "crossed over the room" mean in this sentence?

He was filled with an immence curiousity to have his own hand read, and feeling somewhat shy about putting himself forward crossed over the room.

    Thank you.

It means "walked across the room", that is, he walked from one side to the other.
