    doubts on a sentence

    Dear teachers,

I found this description in an essay:

    "Psychologists showed a box to
young children and asked them to pretend that there was a monster
inside it. When later given the chance to approach the box, the
children often refused to put their fingers in the box.
Children are different in this regard from adults in degree, not
in kind. My bet is that if adults were tested in the monster-box
study, they would hesitate for a fraction of a second before putting
their fingers in the same way that we don’t like to drink soup from a new bedpan, or sip water from a cup labeled “cyanide” even if we know that it is
    fresh from the tap".

Do you assume that if children "put their fingers in th box" the box is opened or there is a hole on it? And is the "cup" literally a cup or rather a glass (made of plastics)?

    Thank you,

    Re: doubts on a sentence

The box could have a hole or a lid. The cup could be literally a cup or something similar- any drinking vessel labelled cyanide. In both cases, what matters is that you can put your hand in or read the word, and not how this is achieved IMO.
