    Is there a term for

a part of ob maybe a piece of machinery that is deliberately designed to be weaker and therefore to break down first before an further harm can be done.

In German we call that a "Sollbruchstelle". 'Predetermined breaking point' is a translation that comes close but I'm actually looking for something a little more colloquial.

    Does anything come to mind?

    Thanks.

Re: Is there a term for

    How about a "fail-safe" point?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
