    Smile out on the rigs

Hello. I don't know exactly the phrase, "out on the rigs."
Does it mean jobs related to trucks or something? Please help!

I've got a casual job in a video shop, but there's work out on the rigs. I might get a job there next year.

In the UK, that would mean the oil rigs, oil drilling platforms in the North Sea.

Specifically, principally, in NE Scotland - Aberdeen is one notable centre. (Peter Maxwell Davies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia wrote a piano piece that some people may have heard - 'Farewell to Stromness' (sp?), dedicated to a landscape due to be obliterated by the building of an oil refinery. Not sure why I thought of that)

Thanks. But the speaker is in Australia in the story. Can it be the oil rigs too?

It might be, you will have to wait for the opinion of an Australian member.
