    Re: made of -from?2

Make of implies there are no other (or few) major elements. A ring made of gold=golden ring

Make from - there are other ingredients too

Yes, but we don't say Wine is made of grapes but Wine is made from grapes, meaning that grape is the only element.

That's what a native speaker, who was my teacher at university, told me.

"Wine is made from grapes" conveys the meaning that grapes are no longer recognizable in their original form in wines.
This ring is made of gold = it's obvious, it's still gold, it hasn't become something else.

    Re: made of -from?2

Sorry, now I see the point. What I wanted to say is that made of may or may not imply that there are other elements, but they are recognizable in their form.

Made from means that the only element is not recognizable in its form.

    Re: made of -from?2

In addition to the above analyses and counter-analyses,I think the easiest way to know the difference between MADE OF and MADE FROM is the production type.Materials that are converted to other finished products have those products MADE FROM them eg... BREAD is MADE FROM FLOUR...flour is converted to something different altogether.

Some shoes are MADE OF leather. The leather is still seen even when something else has been made of it.
