In the U.S., you can ask "What grade are you in?" for anyone up until high school. At college/university, as "What year are you in?"

Hello,
I would appreciate it if you can help me out here;
How can I ask a student about his or her level of the class at school?
Would it be right if I say " What's your grade at school" or "what's your level at school?"
Thanks in advance

I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
