The rising intonation is usually used in yes / no question
for example : are you happy ?

what happens if the falling intonation is used for the yes/no question ?
what's on the speaker's mind ?

It would be helpful if you could give an example. I can't think of any yes/no questions that would use the falling intonation. However, there are a few other question types where you would use the falling intonation:

falling intonation

How many people are coming?
Why are being so mean?


If you could give me an example, I would be happy to clarify. Intonation is very important though - if you get it wrong, it sounds extremely strange. There is a scene in the movie Anchorman which demonstrates this!
