Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

Its commander lifted himself out of the hatch, jumped down, and began to pump Lester’s hand enthusiastically.

pump somebody’s hand = concuss somebody’s hand by handshake

It means to shake someone's hand very vigorously/very hard (moving it up and down as if using a water pump, perhaps!)

Again, although I have never heard concuss used in this way, I have found an online dictionary that gives a possible definition of "to shake violently".

In my experience, I have only ever heard it used to describe an injury to the brain caused by a blow/knock to the head.
