    compensate

Is the word compensate a common word?
Is there any synonym (for compensate) that is more common?

    Hi hitinvo
    I think it's a common word.
To recompense/compensate sb for their loss.
Compensate - make up for; recompense suitably; reward.
I would like somehow to make up for the loss.

    Regards.

    Re: compensate

The 'recompense' meaning, when it refers to salary and benefits, is a fairly recent import to Br English. It was only when I started working for a US company that I realized that 'compensation' wasn't something that made up for something, but what I got for working. (I suppose I could have seen it as 'compensation' for missing day-time TV!)
