(1) You are 100% correct: the first sentence is "correct."

(a) "a lot" is a unit.

(b) It means "much."

(c) "I'm feeling much better today."

(1) Should that sentence say "an"?

No, they were not AN attractive lot.

(2) in this case, "lot" means something like a group.

(a) In other words, they were not an attractive group.

(2) I have never read "Gone with the Wind." Maybe another poster

can tell you what that speaker meant.

(a) One definition of "attractive" is "good-looking."

Attractive can also mean "sexy", but I believe the latter is less nice.
