X-bar syntax or Reed-Kellog? Which do you want?

    ***** NOT A TEACHER *****

    Good morning.

    (1) When you say "diagram," do you mean analyze or parse?

    (a) That is, do you want to know the parts of speech?

    (2) Or do you want a tree diagram or a Reed-Kellogg diagram?

    (a) If you do, go to the "Diagramming" forum at this website.

    (i) An excellent teacher there will help you with Reed-Kellogg.

    (3) Succeeding = gerund

in homework = prepositional phrase that modifies "Succeeding."
(in = preposition) (homework = noun + object of preposition)

Succeeding in homework = complete subject

will lead = verb (will = auxiliary/ modal + lead = base form of verb)

to success = prepositional phrase that modifies verb (will lead)

in finals = prepositional phrase that modifies "success."

Succeeding (in homework) + will lead + to success (in finals).

    Have a nice day!

    TheParser,

Is it '[[succeeding in] X] or succeeding [in X]?

Which interpretation do you prefer and why?

    Great question!!!

    I have no idea.

I would just follow high school grammar and parse it as gerund + preposition.

Thanks for pointing out that "succeeding in" could be considered a unit.

But, then, wouldn't you also have to parse "succeeding at" as a unit, too?

I'll just stick with my high-school level grammar. Too old for all that

    modern talk.

    Have a nice day!
