2. in the playground
Is one American/ British English?

(1) I think that you have hit the nail on the head: it does seem to
be an American/British difference.
(2) I believe that many (most?) Americans feel more comfortable
saying, "My children are ON the playground."
(3) This in/on difference is very interesting.
(a) Americans say, "I live ON Maple Street"; I think that our British
friends usually prefer "I live IN Maple Street."
(4) Even here in the States, we do not always agree:
(a) In California: We stand IN line.
(b) In New York: We stand ON line.
