Why use an THE in front of same?

    Hello

Why do we have to use the THE in front of SAME?

    Examples are,

A and B are the same.
A is the same as B

    * I mistyped the title. Why use a THE in front of SAME

    the French

Never mind! I am just toying with English.

    the same (thing)

A and B are the identical
A and B are the same.
    A and B are identical.
    A and B are same.

    'the same' = adjectival idiom?

That's a fair question given that we say, "A and B are different/similar", without the article. "Same" could have evolved in the same way, but it didn't.
